It is a feet-on-the-ground program that addresses the physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of dependence on mind-affecting chemicals--i.e., alcoholism and drug addiction. Granted, "alcoholism" is drug addiction but for cultural reasons, it is often confused as something different. This blog will not make that mistake.

I have been clean and sober for well over 50 years now, having found the 12 Step programs at age 21. You may or may not benefit from what I have learned and this blog will attempt to share my experiences: the good, the bad, and the ugly. My experience is not only personal (recovery in several 12 Step programs), but professional also. I have a degree in Drugs and Alcohol from Metropolitan University in Denver; I am a seven times peer-viewed published researcher; I have been a deputy in law enforcement; many of my family is in recovery or still in the throws of addiction. I am a Hazelden author and small publisher of really practical, down to earth recovery literature. I've experienced this disease from all sides and want to share this with you.

The best thing about my blog is that it is practical--not highfalutin, expensive, self-righteous, or especially not as an expert speaking down to you. This informative blog is peer to peer, one addict to another, one mother to another, one spouse to another, one professional to another, one friend to another.

Join me, we are in this together.

PS I'm going to offer lots of free things for you to download or order for FREE that will help you help alcoholics and addicts in recovery. Sometimes it is not very responsible to attend face to face 12 Step meetings because of a multitude of health reasons. During a pandemic and during stable times, health concerns are more numerous than we think and can put everyone at risk. If you have an infections disease, don't go to face to face meetings, please. But that doesn't mean not to attend meetings. You can go to virtual meetings of all kinds and get just as much support as always--and you can share you experience, strength, and hope too.

We have so many immune compromised people in our rooms, please think about using virtual meetings when you are sick or at risk. Consider leading these meetings, sponsoring these meetings, and supporting these meetings during your Intergroup and area conferences. Here is the info you need:
Important update. 12 Step Meetings and Covid-19. What you need to know.

Eye-rolling
not appreciate in 12 Step Meetings for those who want to take flu
precautions

We want members to feel safe getting the help they need to stay
clean & sober. Watch the video and download the group guidelines
flier linked in the description over at YouTube. You may be in the
"roll your eyes" crowd who think any concern over Covid-19
is alarmist and unnecessary--OK stop reading and I pray that I am
dead wrong in my caution and am never in a position to say, "I
told you so.".

According to Dr. Nancy Messonnier,
director of the CDC's National Center for Immunizations and
respiratory diseases, “At some point, we are likely to see
community spread in the U.S. .." and now it has taken a foothold
in our country.

"The corona-virus produces mild
cold symptoms in about 80% of patients, Dr. Sylvie Briand, head of
WHO’s Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness division, told
reporters on Monday. About 15% of the people who contract the virus
have ended up with pneumonia, with 3% to 5% of all patients needing
intensive care, she said." This comes from an article
from cnbc.

Right now, it is probably not
widespread in the US--yet the "foothold" is here. Rumors
abound and people often go to extremes--from the "I'm in God's
hands and I accept God's will." to the conspiracy alarmists who
are convinced all governments, the CDC and WHO are lying to us and
we're all about to die except for a few rich guys in bunkers
somewhere in Iceland.

12 Step Groups have long ignored flu
season protocol. That's fine for the healthy--but so many of our
members have compromised immune systems, that maybe we should not be
so causal when infectious diseases are spreading in our communities.

I attend a 12 Step group here in
Kingman, AZ and we do take some precautions. There is antibacterial
gel on each table and we use disposable cups. But that is about it. I
would suggest that members NOT roll their eyes at those who choose to
wear masks, gloves, use the gel and step back when the hand-holding
prayer comes. I think we should start Face-timing the meetings for
those home bound, and I think we should be smart.

"This new virus represents a
tremendous public health threat," she said. "We are now
taking and will continue to take unprecedented, aggressive action to
reduce the impact of this virus ... on the communities in the US."
Messonnier
said. Rational thought and precautions for our members, our
family, in 12 Step groups is the smart and loving thing to
consider. No eye-rolling please.

It's been a while! Sorry for the hiatus--but here is a good video I did a while back. There are times when sh*t happens and at these HALT moments, you need to
pick up your Pocket Sponsor. This video is a rather funny look at
life--but Facebook refused to let me advertise or promote this video for
recovery because they said that "sh*t happens" wasn't appropriate. I
find that hilarious because of all the sh*t they do promote--but I
digress...
Look, even if Facebook won't let me promote this, maybe you'd like to
share it?

I am so grateful for places like Angel Manor in Kingman that are available to young women that need help with addiction and alcoholism. God bless Wendy for working with them and keeping it up against great odds. God bless the many volunteers like Tina Salazar who continue to help. At Day By Day, we offer what little support we can--each year at Xmas time, we try to give a recovery gift to each resident. Lat year we gave a few recovery coloring book/journal. They were so sweet and even took one of the pages they colored and signed it, as a thank you.

We love the girls--Hang in there. And if you want to give someone a clean and sober Christmas gift set (they start at only $1), please visit our Christmas Store.

Happy Millerites Day to all you alarmists out there for the Day of Great Disappointment--October 22.

I honor all alarmists in memory of the charismatic preacher Miller who predicted the end of the world on October 22,1844, and greatly disappointed his followers when it failed to happen. But if you think it's just religious nuts and preppers that concern themselves with doomsday scenarios, you would be wrong.

It is not just religious kooks who run around predicting the end of the world bringing fear into our homes and communicating catastrophe on social media pages. It is major scientists like Paul Ehrlich in the Population Bomb, who predicted it would all be over by this time, the UN who keeps changing the tipping point date for turning our planet into an inferno, Molina and Rowland, two chemists at the University of California who revealed the threats to the ozone layer and so on. In fact, 22 percent of Americans believe that the world will end in their lifetime. Seriously?

Today I laugh--for if the Zombies do arise in our lifetime, or the arctic melts and we hit a tipping point and burst into flames, just remember that both the scientists and the kooks have something in common when predicting that the end is nigh, they are both always wrong!

I have been seduced at times, thinking the world might be in for it-such as hiding under my desk as a kid in case of nuclear attack. I was one of the suckers who bought a hand turn washing gadget to get through Spencer Bolles' Y2K 2000 fascicle. But since then I have become a healthy skeptic. Does wonders for my serenity.

For your amusement, here is a list of what we have lived through--and note that many of these Catastrophes were predicted by Nobel Prize winners!

2012 Maya Apocalypse
Salmonella from Eggs
BSC (mad cow disease)
Pandemics to end the world (organic and orchestrated, HIV,Ebola, various flues)
Global cooling (new ice age returning)
Acid Rain
Holes in the Ozone
Flesh eating virus
Planet X
17 foot raise in the sea level
Population bomb
Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change
All 1196 Maldives islands would sink underwater within 30 years (this is year 30)
The U.N.’s Doomsday Climate Clock
The atomic Scientist's Doomsday Clock
Super volcanoes

Less popular but still notable
July 29, 2016, because of something called a “polar flip.
Barack Obama would reveal himself to be the Antichrist.
blood moon-supermoon phenomena generated several end-of-the-world
Superintelligent AI takeover
Alien invasion

So even though the scientists and the nut balls all have the same track record, --they are wrong, one day, one of the two camps will be right and I figure at this rate, we have as much chance of the nut ball being right as we do of the scientist!

We always think of helping the parent of teenage drug addicts and alcoholics and often forget the parents of adult addicts. Sometimes it is more tragic for the 70 year old parent struggling to know what to do with their 55 year old addict "child."

Parents empowering parents | Sequim Gazette: "“It’s so important not only for the adult addict but for the parents to have this support,” Joanna said.
“I never was a big believer in support groups but I am now,” she said. “It really has helped especially when you feel so alone.”
Pay It Forward. Together we can help struggling centers.: "One of my favorite movies is "Pay It Forward"--where people do good for others, just because. Many, many organizations who work with addicts and alcoholics do just that--they sacrifice much to try and help the struggling alcoholic/addict and their families. At Day By Day, we have endeavored to help those centers help others by starting our own "Pay It Forward" program. For well over 10 years we have sent thousands of dollars of recovery books to hundreds of centers. It has been our honor to do so.

In fact, this last week 5 treatment centers have requested free books from our "Pay It Forward" program. We simply don't have the resources. This is common and we have always sent what we could. We, at Day By Day, are now exploring other ways to help Pay It Forward to the many deserving treatment centers with limited funds that struggle to help those in recovery.

One of the things we do, and will expand on, is allowing much of our material to be freely downloaded and used by centers. "

If you want to help--go here: Pay It Forward. Together we can help struggling centers.: and give us your suggestions.

in the meantime, will you think about helping these struggling centers--if you live in the same state or close?
For the 23 years leading up to his birth, Horne had used everything from marijuana to meth and heroin, never thinking she’d be anything but an addict. Two months before Michael was born, she stopped using meth and heroin in hopes they wouldn’t show up on tests. He tested positive for marijuana and the state Department of Human Services stepped in. : ""Because this opioid epidemic is really affecting everyone, rich and poor, you can't make assumptions about who might be at risk," said Bailey. In her reporting, Bailey encountered stories of those who stole and abused opioid prescription painkillers from at-home hospice patients. "There's no real good national data on this problem. We don't know how common this is, but we do know that enrollment in hospice has been rising rapidly. About half of people who die in America are now in hospice care. And most of the time hospice staff are actually coming to the home," Bailey said on "Central Time.""
